Introd Introduction PAGE PAGE 10 Introduction Susan Sontag sparked national attention when she published “Notes on ‘Camp’” in the fall issue of Partisan Review, 1964, and generated an array of critical responses since the publication in 1966 of her important collection of essays, Against Interpretation and Other Essays. Essayist, critic, novelist, screenwriter, polemicist, activist and film and theater director, Susan Sontag is internationally known for her extraordinary intellectual range and vigor and for her skeptical approach to genre. As a female writer, Sontag has been labeled at various times as “the sensational Susan Sontag,” “the high prophetess of high fashion,” “Miss Camp,” “the new dark lady of American letters,” etc.. Known primarily for her essays and reviews, Sontag has also penned three novels, written and directed four feature-length films, composed a collection of short stories, and penned several plays which have also been treated with great respect. Born in New York City in 1933, Sontag was raised by relatives while her parents worked in the fur trade in Tianjin, China. Upon the death of Sontags father in China from tuberculosis, Sontags mother returned from abroad and took Sontag and her younger sister to live in Arizona. In 1945, Sontags mother married Captain Sontag, whose surname Sontag adopted. The family then moved to Canoga Park, California, a suburb of Los Angeles located in the San Fernando Valley. Sontag graduated from North Hollywood High School at the age of fifteen and attended the University of California at Berkeley for one year before transferring to the University of Chicago. A precocious student, at seventeen, following a ten-day courtship, Sontag married the sociologist Philip Rieff. After obtaining her B.A. in philosophy from the University of Chicago, Sontag moved to Boston with Rieff where she enrolled as a graduate student at Harvard University and acquired master’s degrees in both English and philosophy.
