PAGE PAGE 3 ABSTRACT “The Analects of Confucius” is one of the most important Confucian literature, and in each dynasty, innumerable scholars annotated for it. Among them, explanatory note of Analects of Confucius （《论语正义》）by Liu Baonan(刘宝楠） is the most famous work which can be called the models of the notes for the Analects. As the most representative noter, he payed more attention to detailed and full textual criticism, includes the ancient institutions, naming and system, customs and etiquettes, historical events and the name of person and places, which reflects Qian-Jias learning style of textual criticism and the characteristics of annotation in Qing Dynasty . This paper focus on the explanatory note of Analects of Confucius ’s functions of institution in the exegesis. And before discuss the functions, the author determine the content and divied the content into five categories, including institution related to life, institution of etiquette and music, institution of military and punishment, institution of astronomy ,as well as institution of geography . the institution related to life has three parts: naming and system, fields scope and quality , taxes. The institution of etiquette and music also divided into six parts, which includes the etiquette of sacrifice, burial, shooting, dressing, visiting, dancing with music. The institution of astronomy has astronomy and calender, besides, institution of geography has surveying of place name and geography.From above , the author summarize the functions of institution exegetics are to clear the meaning, reveal linguistic structure and provide relevant context.
