Abstract Since Shannon proposed “redundancy”, redundancy has become a more and more popular topic in fields such as translation theory and practice, linguistics, English teaching and learning, Business English and so forth due to its universe in languages. Redundancy in texts indicates unnecessary information to readers, but, in fact, it’s a necessary part of a text. In business contracts, there are a lot of redundancy, the usage of redundancy meets the need of accuracy and formality of contracts. Considering its importance, this report mainly explores the translation methods of redundancy in Contract for Purchase and Sale of Equipment and Services. This report is composed of four parts. In the first part, the author introduces the main contents of the Contract for Purchase and Sale of Equipment and Services and the significance of this topic. In the second part, the author gives a definition of redundancy and analyzes the reasons for it, then classifies redundancy into four different types and elaborates the translation methods of it. In the third part, the focus of this report, the author discusses five translation methods of redundancy in Contract for Purchase and Sale of Equipment and Services, which are amplification, omission, condensation, repetition and conversion. In the last part, the author draws the conclusion and summarizes the lessons learned in the translation process.
