During his lifetime, he engaged himself in various kinds of translation activities, including 17 of Shakespeare‘s plays, 5 pieces of Calderon theatres, as well as a great number of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese lyrics. Based on his translation practice, Schlegel formulated his unique philosophy of poetic translation, namely, ⅰ) being faithful to the original; ⅱ) reproducing the spirit of the original; ⅲ) translating everything poetically. However, owing to the difficulty and complexity in poetic translation, no one paid attention to his translation philosophy until the late of the 19th century.
