Special thanks go to my supervisor, Professor Zhang Ming. Without his patient guidance, careful revision and insightful instruction, I would never have been able to bring this thesis into light. His erudition, strictness and patience as a supervisor; and his kindness, consideration and tolerance as a friend make my study more than meaningful. He teaches me not only how to conduct research on second language acquisition, but also how to be an upright person. I do wish to dedicate this thesis to him, with most of the virtues due to him but the demerits to myself. I feel tremendously grateful to the students participating in my research. But for their cooperation, the data collection for the paper would have been impossible. Abstract Vocabulary learning is central to language acquisition, and is also the biggest headache for most college students in China. Therefore, it is an important issue for teachers to work out an effective way of vocabulary instruction. As we know, the development of computer has greatly improved teaching environment and holds great potential for language education. Language teachers have utilized multimedia computer in many aspects of language instruction, such as, listening, reading and writing, but the author finds that few researchers apply multimedia to vocabulary instruction, so the author tries to prove that, multimedia could e
