Acknowledgements This thesis is the best fruit of my three yeas’ hard work, I feel indebted to all the teachers of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics of School of Foreign Language in Shenyang Normal University, without who I couldn’t get the inspiration on English writing and finally began my research. I am truly grateful to my advisor, Professor Zhao Tianshu, whose profound knowledge, invaluable guidance, continuous encouragements and careful evaluation have helped me greatly to complete this thesis. My gratitude also gives to my classmates and friends, they always help me when I am in need, such as collecting the questionnaires and analyzing the data, and give me suggestions. Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to my parents, they give me support both in material and spiritual aspects during the years I pursuing my Master’s degree. Abstract English writing as an important productive and communicative skill is always considered the most significant skill among the four basic skills of English language, thus attracts many English scholars and teachers, and increasingly, great importance has been attached to it. The most fundamental problem of writing is the lack of interest and no confidence in writing, and thus students feel very difficult to start a composition and have nothing to say in writing practice. Product approach, process approach and genre approach are the three dominant approaches in the field of writing in China, but these approaches have advantages as well as disadvantages. The researcher applies the creative thinking strategies to process approach in order to stimulate students’ inspiration, increase their interest and strengthen their confidence to accomplish the ultimate goal of improving their English writing ability. To test the effectiveness of creative thinking strategies in process writing, the researcher takes a series of measures.
