To them I dedicate this thesis in token of affection and gratitude. i Abstract ABSTRACT Tao Te Ching, a repository of ancient Chinese wisdom, is very concise in language and profound in meaning. Despite its length of only five thousand words, its poetic language has illustrated vast philosophical and dialectical thoughts, receiving great attention from scholars all over the world. Moreover, its translated versions are also in great
