II II Abstract Overseas Chinese Newspaper，as one of the three major pillars(overseas Chinese newspaper, Chinese education overseas and overseas Chinese associations) in overseas Chinese society, has not only published stories on the diligence and toughness of overseas Chinese in Africa, but also depicted the vicissitudes of their social status and culture. It has a history of 115 years and enjoys various types of over 47 kinds. Since the previous academic studies on overseas Chinese newspaper in Africa is fragmented, this present study aims to give an overall study about it This paper will have a systematic analysis on overseas Chinese newspaper’s development in the following aspects. Firstly, the writer will divide the historical course of overseas Chinese newspaper into 4 stages, namely founding period, development period, boom period, and the period of further development with the transformation of people’s conceptions. Secondly, the writer will have a detailed analysis on the changes in terms of literary styles, such as contents, layout styles and ways of report. Thirdly, the author will have a deep analysis on the four major social functions of the overseas Chinese newspaper. The four functions include inheriting and popularizing Chinese culture, promoting the development of overseas Chinese society, strengthening the internal unity among all overseas Chinese and enabling overseas Chinese to integrate into outside world. Besides, the writer will summarize the difficulties which impede the development of the newspaper, such as over-competing caused by over-supply of newspapers and political manipulations. Then, the author will provide some possible solutions to address these issues. Finally, the author will have an analysis on the opportunities that overseas Chinese newspaper in Africa will meet in its late development when overseas Chinese have a higher status in politics, economics and culture.
