II II III III Abstract With the fact that world economy developing quickly, traffic demand increasing rapidly, traffic jam has becomed a gravely problem which affected people life and society economic growth. Building an highway is an important approach to resolve the traffic jam. highway relative to ordinary road, which had some characteristics such as fleetness, high effectiveness, comfortableness, convenience and safety. But aways hard to satisfy with the gigantic increasing traffic demand, while also existed the traffic jam, traffic safety and environmental pollution. Highway traffic system is a complex system,with obvious timeliness and extensity, reflected the characteristics of typical topological structure in the management and control. A lot of accidental factors determining the traffic system lead to the traditional control method difficult to achieved the satisfactory results. The intelligent controls simulated the human intelligence to achieve the control purpose, processing complexity and uncertainty problems with good results. Aim at the current problems of complexity status in intelligent traffic system and the uncertainty,non-linear of traffic control system, applied the Agent technology in traffic control system, a highway control system based on Multi-Agent technology is designed. First,the highway traffic control, multi-agent technology and Domestic and O verseas traffic control’ application status based on multi-agent technology ware reviewed, then conclude the multi- agent technology.Analyze and research the principle of traffic flow pattern and the method of highway control system.
