It flows thro ugh the Jiaodong peninsula from Jiaozhou channel to Laizhou chan nel. It was cut in ZhiYuan seventeenth year ( AD 1280) in Yuan Dynasty , and abandoned in YongZheng second year ( AD 1724) i n Qing Dynasty. Jiaolai Canal is short-lived , but it records the har d process that people in ancient times explored for resolving the w ater transportation from north to south,and it has played an importa nt role in history. The dissertation investigates the history of Jiaolai canal from Yu an Dynasty to Qing Dynasty until nowadays according to time sequ ence as objectively, roundly and systematacially as possible, and an alyses the reasons why Jiaolai Canal was abandoned as well as its influence and lessons for modern times.The full text is divided into five major sections: Chapter One is the general introduction to Jiaolai Canal. It rec ommends the history meaning of Jiaolai Canal`s name , the drainag e basin situation and its primary trunk stream along with its tributa ries. ChapterTwo introduces the prosperous and depressed condition o f Jiaolai Canal in Yuan Dynasty. It analyzes the historical backgrou nd of being excavated, the course of being excavated and the reaso n why Jiaolai Canal was abandoned finally. Chapter Three introduces the prosperous and depressed condition of Jiaolai Canal in Ming Dynasty from the historical background o f being excavated once again and the dispute towards Jiaolai Canal. Chapter Four introduces the situation of adjustment and dredging of Jiaolai Canal from Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China as wel l as before and after the founding of the Republic. Chapter Five combines with the proposal of “Jiaolai artificial S ea Canal” raised by some scholars，and it discusses probe into the possibility of being excavated nowadays.
