Abstract
Chinese poetry is the essence of Chinese culture and Chinese poetry
translating has always aroused general concern. When translating Chinese
poetry, poetic elements like rhyme, rhythm, image, poetic language, etc.
should be taken into considerations to achieve aesthetic effects.
According to Andre Lefevere‟s manipulation theory (also known as
rewriting theory), there are three factors influencing translating: ideology,
patronage and poetics. In Andre Lefevere‟s opinion, dominant poetics
manipulates translating and translating should conform to the dominant
poetics. The thesis aims to analyze the translation of Busuanzi from the
perspective of poetics in manipulation theory.
When translating Chinese poems into English, it should be conducted
to conform to western dominant poetics and Chinese poetics, which
means that the poems had better be translated like an English poem and
remain the characteristics of Chinese culture to a certain extent. The
thesis aims to analyze the poetic elements including rhyme, rhythm,
images, antithesis, etc. presented in phonology, lexicon, syntax, etc in the
translation of Busuanzi from the perspective of poetics of translation, and
discuss how beauty in sense, beauty in sound, and beauty in form can be
achieved following those poetic elements.
