College of Flight Technology, C ivilAviation F light Un iversity of China, Guanghan 618 07, China) Abstract: To mi prove the precision of area navigation, the formu las of calcu lating the in itial course and route d istance of an FANS ( the future air navigation system ) route w as derived through spatial vector analyses. A smi ulation calculation w as made by the Smi pson numerical integra,l and the smi ulated resu lts of the initial course and route d istance w ere comparedw ith those based on the great circle route. The research show s that if the d istance of a nearly east-w est route is less than 1 000 km, the FANS route is approxmi ately 0. 5% longer than the great circle route, but if the d istance of a nearly south-north route is less than 1 000 km, the FANS route is about 0. 24% shorter than the great circle route.
