The teaching of grammar has always been the focus in the field of research of English teaching, and the controversy over the issue of whether grammar should be taught or not has been going on for many centuries. Some researchers advocate the grammar teaching in class while other linguists hold the opposite view. Meanwhile, there are changes of attitudes towards the teac hing of grammar in China.
The present study, based on previous relevant researches on the teaching of grammar, attempted to investigate the attitudes held by students and teachers in a Chinese senior high school towards grammar teaching, and illustrating the importance of grammar teaching in senior high school for teachers and students. The subjects involved in this study were 100 senior high school students and 50 English teachers. It utilized the revised questionnaire based on the questionnaires by Schulz (2001), Simon Borg (1999) and Burgess Etherington (2002) and aimed to explore the following three aspects of grammar teaching: (1) the attitudes that students and teachers held towards English grammar teaching in senior high school; (2) the role that grammar plays in EFT; (3) the difficulties that respectively happened in grammar teaching and grammar learning. It intended to help teachers and students change some of their language learning beliefs about the teaching of English grammar, adopt better learning methods and strategies and thus improve teaching and learning outcomes.
The findings of the study were as follows: (1) students and teachers in senior high school generally held positive attitudes toward grammar teaching and they thought it was important to teach grammar in English teaching in senior high school; (2) all the subjects believed that grammar played an important role in EFT; (3) students had difficulties in learning grammatical rules by heart and in
transforming the grammatical knowledge into communicative ability. Besides, when teaching grammatic
