Annually, more than 300,000 patients are diagnosed with EC worldwide. In China, an annual increase of over 150, 000 is reported, and most of the patients are affected by esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). According to our knowledge, the 5-year survival rate of patients with early EC after surgery or radiation therapy is up to 90%, but that of patients with moderate/advanced EC is less than 10%. Therefore, effective screening of high-risk population susceptible to EC, timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to reduce the mortality rate of the patients.
