Ab Ab stract After World War II，western translation study witnessed a summit in its theories．New translation theories and new translation theorists are emerging，such as Eugene A．Nida’S communicative translation theory, J．C．Catford’S linguistic approach，Holmes’S‘‘translation studiesnotion， Bassnett’S cultural studies，Andr6 Lefevere’S manipulation theory,Even Zohar’S polysystem theory,George Steiner’s hermeneutic notions in translation，Jacques Derrida’S‘‘disseminating’’and‘‘defferance’of meaning theory,etc．Each theory discusses translation from one perspective and investigates only one or several aspects of translating activities．None of these theories can incorporate all aspects of translating activities in their sphere of theory． Since there are various theories in western translation study field， controversies are inevitable．Scholars holding one theory may criticize the demerits of other theories．There are many cases to exemplify this．In fact， translating activity is such a complex event that no theory can investigate all aspects of it．It is very natural that each theory is not perfect and has demerit．Therefore，in criticizing other theories，people should keep in mind that one’S own theory cannot be perfect and that theories of others surely cannot be total nonsense．Since there is no theory which Can cover translation translation at three levels：linguistic，cultural and philosophical levels．In this light，the paper proposes a holistic approach：translation study should include all the three aspects，that is，linguistic level，cultural level and philosophical level；the relationship of the three levels in the holistic approach approach can be described as：cultural level higher than linguistic level and philosophical level higher than cultural level．Studying translation 仃om the height of philosophical level means exploring the essence of language and meaning，which can deepen our understanding of translation；translating as a social activity is inevitably affected by
