Contents Do computer games increase tendencies to violence in children? There is a growing body of opinion that the high level of violence depicted in many computer games does have a deleterious (毒害身心的) effect on children, contributing to the observed increase in violent behaviour exhibited by juveniles. According to an article in the June 1994 issue of Psychology Digest, a definite correlation has been established between the growing violence on television and in movies and the increase in aggressive behaviour of people in general, but especially in the young. Computer Violence What are violent computer games doing to our children? Published: Journal of Cyber Psychology and Behaviour, October 2006. Study of 299 adolescent boys in the Netherlands and Belgium. Boys that displayed aggressive traits were especially attracted to violent games and spent more time playing them than boys displaying lower aggressive traits. Playing violent games increases aggressiveness and decreases empathy, which in turn leads to increased appreciation and use of violent games Understanding the Rating System The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is an industry organization that has developed a rating system for computer, Internet and video games. Most games sold in North America are rated using this system. ESRB three parts: rating symbols suggest age appropriateness for the game (on the front of the game box) content descriptors to indicate elements in a game that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern (on the back of the game box); more detailed rating summaries that are available through the ESRB Web site. As well as the rating system, the ESRBs Advertising Review Council (ARC) has developed a list of Principles and Guidelines to ensure responsible advertising practices by the video-game industry. ARC is also responsible for responding to concerns or complaints raised by consumers regarding the marketing of video games. Question
