i i Abstract Langston Hughes, an extraordinary contributor to the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s, is also one of the greatest poets in the 20th century American literary field. Both his contribution to the literary world and his influence upon the Black cultural promotion have attracted abundant criticisms, among which Hughes Black aesthetic performance in his poetry is one hot topic for discussion in the academic field. However, these criticisms were mainly tackled from the perspective of traditional literary criticism. There are still quite a lot of affluent idiosyncratic linguistic features as well as outstanding cognitive dimensions for the poetic effects staying unexamined. Against this research background, this thesis proposes that cognitive poetics can be an appropriate perspective in the interpretation of the Black aesthetic values shown in Langston Hughes poetry, focusing on touching upon readers cognition and perception in grasping the poets uniqueness in poetry creation. From the perspective of cognitive poetics, the present study investigates into the issue of how Langston Hughes’ aesthetic values be presented in his poetry and how they are realized by readers, which are illustrated from three angles, the writer’s cognitive process in creation, readers’ cognitive process in reading, and the linguistic features. To fulfill the objectives in this study, fifteen Langston Hughes’ poems are inquired in order to analyze the aesthetic values that Hughes endows them with, also a good way interpreting their poetic effect. This whole process is descriptive as well as interpretive, which are dealt with under the frameworks of two important theories in cognitive poetics, Conceptual Blending Theory and Figure/Ground theory.
