AbstractKe”ords：Post-Cold Abstract Ke”ords：Post-Cold War Era，European security，U．S．Impact Classification Code：0852．712 In history，European security has been one of the essential parts of the global security system，especial ly after the Cold War．The construction of the whole European securi ty system involyes nearlY every main strategiC power al l over the world：America，Russia，European Union and its member states．America is the only superpower in the post—Cold War era，SO its role in European securi ty system and the future development of the role are crucial to the construction of new European security system． ThiS thesiS iS based upon the American factor in European security construction after the C01d War． First， after an overview of the construction of European security during the Cold War，America’S strategy towards Europe iS analyzed and a conclusion iS drawn that it has the same structure with America’S global strategy．Also concluded is that Europe plays no less significant Dart in America’S strategy than pending the Cold War．Second，the security cooperation between America and Europe iS studied together with the framework of global strategy towards Europe．The analysiS iS highlighted of two plights in the cooperation．The first originates in the history of American and European security community：the second originates in the challenges from the construction of independent securi ty regimes of“Grand Europe”．The analysis demonstrates the factors that constrain the leading role America intends to play in European security system．Finally，a comprehensive observation is made of the individual strategy of America，European Union and Russia in dealing with the European security construction．It iS emphasized that the influence America imposes on European security after the Cold War will depend on the following aspects： 1．America’S alteration fron the perspective of unipolar 1eadership to that of multipolar leadership： 2．Fortification of the independent se
