Background Information About the author About the text born in Oakland, California. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants. She is a Chinese American writer whose works explore mother-daughter relationships. In 1993, Tans adaptation of her first novel, The Joy Luck Club, became a commercially successful film. The book has been translated into 35 languages. Her father, John Tan , was an electrical engineer and Baptist minister who came to America to escape the turmoil of the Chinese Civil War. Her mother, Daisy , had divorced an abusive husband in China. She was forced to leave her children behind when she escaped on the last boat to leave Shanghai before the Communist takeover in 1949. Her marriage to John Tan produced three children, Amy and her two brothers. The Joy Luck Club Her first book, won her The National Book Award and the L.A. Times Book Award in 1989.
