Multiple-choice quiz * Boardworks A-level Physics Year 1 and AS Materials * Boardworks A-level Physics Year 1 and AS Materials Teacher notes Archimedes principle – The upthrust on a totally or partially submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by the object. breaking point – The point at which a sample of material under stress fractures. breaking stress – The maximum stress experienced by a stressed sample of a material before the sample fractures. Also called the ultimate tensile strength. brittle – A type of material that has a linear stress–strain graph until it fractures. Brittle materials do not undergo plastic deformation. An example of a brittle material is glass. compressive force – A force applied to a material such as a spring that causes it to squash or compress. density – The mass per unit volume of a material. Density is given the symbol r and is calculated by dividing the mass of a sample of the material by its volume: ρ = m/V ductile – A material that undergoes significant plastic deformation under tensile stress before fracturing. Ductile materials can be drawn into wires. An example of a ductile material is copper. effective spring constant – The value for the spring constant, k, for a system of multiple springs (for example, two springs in series or in parallel). elastic deformation – Deformation after which a material will return to its original shape. elasticity – The ability of a material to regain its shape after deforming forces are removed. elastic limit – The point beyond which a sample of a material undergoes plastic deformation. elastic potential energy – The energy stored in a body due to a load causing a deformation.
