Do You Know When Basketball Was Invented?
Teaching Aims:
Knowledge aims:
With the help of the meanings in the context and the explanation of the teacher, students are able to guess the meanings of important new words and phrases including Canadian, divide, hero, divide into, look up to, etc.
Ability aims: Learn the history, development and popularity of basketball with mind-mapping strategy.
Emotion aims: Inspire the love for sports and for life.
Important and difficult teaching points: Help students
be able to guess the meanings of new words
know main ideas of the passage
realize they should love sports, life and nation.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1:Pre-reading:
1. Watch a video about basketball to lead in the topic of the passage.
2. Show learning aims of the class to let the students work hard to get them.
Step 2: While-reading:
1. Skimming:
Skim every paragraph and match the main idea with the paragraphs.
2. Careful Reading:
Read paragraph 1 carefully and get the main information for the mind-map and the time line.
Read paragraph 2 carefully and fill in the blanks of Fact Sheet. Then answer several questions with the comprehension of paragraph 2 and students’ own knowledge background.
Read paragraph 3 carefully and get the main information for the mind-map.
3. Summary: Summarize the content of the passage with a mind-map.
4. Retelling:
Let the students retell the passage by using their own language.
Step 3: After-reading
1. Extense basketball, the national sport of America into ping-pong, the national sport of China.
2. Work in groups to write a short passage with the mind map(each student is responsible for a part of the passage), then show to the class.
Step 4: Homework
1. If you want to know more about ping-pong, you can surf the Internet.
Perfect the passage about ping-pong, including history, development and popularity.

教学对象为我校初中三年级的学生,由于学生的英语基础比较薄弱,英语学习,特别是英语长篇阅读的学习,对他们来说也就困难重重。传统的做法,已不再相宜。我一直在
