Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead-in T asks students to guess what the following poem is about. 远看山有色，近听水无声。春去花还在，人来鸟不惊。 ——王维（唐） T asks students to explain the following sentence. Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks. —Simonides of Ceos T asks students about some famous painters and popular types of painting. Then T shows four paintings and asks students to tell which type they belong to. Sample answers: Picture 1 is a portrait painting because the painting is of a person’s head and shoulders. Picture 2 is a still life painting because the painting is of flowers that have been arranged in a vase. Picture 3 is a real-life painting because the painter painted real people in a real situation; they are dancing and socializing.
