Unit 3 The art of painting
Welcome to the unit Reading (I)
Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
tell something about Impressionism, including its features, two great painters, masterpieces and influence;
analyse the multiple meanings of the title;
introduce the Musée d’Orsay as a tour guide.
Key competence focus

Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T asks students to guess what the following poem is about.
远看山有色,近听水无声。春去花还在,人来鸟不惊。
——王维(唐)
T asks students to explain the following sentence.
Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.
—Simonides of Ceos
T asks students about some famous painters and popular types of painting. Then T shows four paintings and asks students to tell which type they belong to.
Sample answers:
Picture 1 is a portrait painting because the painting is of a person’s head and shoulders.
Picture 2 is a still life painting because the painting is of flowers that have been arranged in a vase. Picture 3 is a real-life painting because the painter painted real people in a real situation; they are dancing and socializing.
Picture 4 is a landscape painting because the painting is of a natural view of mountains.
【设计意图:由王维的诗《画》引入本单元开篇古希腊抒情诗人西摩尼德斯的名句“画是无言的诗,诗是有声的画”,让学生自由表达对绘画艺术的理解,谈论熟悉的绘画流派,并能辨认一些大众画派的作品,为引出印象画派这一话题作铺垫。】
Step 2 Pre-reading

Have you visited any art museum? Is it a rewarding experience? Why do you think people visit art museums?
Today we’ll read a travel journal about a visit to an art museum. What will it talk about according to the title and the picture?
【设计意图:从学生的生活体验入手,谈论参观艺术博物馆的意义,从而进入文本的主题语
境——a travel journal,让学生根据图片和标题来预测文本内容, 引领学生关注中心词“impression”,培养学生预测性思维能力。】
