This novel depicted the situation of black women under the dual persecution of race and gender between illusion and reality. The description of endless trauma and fear for black women was realized through a great deal of symbolic strategies. Based on a systematical interpretation of three types symbols in Beloved—the naming of characters, the selecting of scene and the symbolic meaning of tree, this study attempts to explore the obliquely-expressed meanings hidden behind these symbols so as to help readers gain a better understanding of theme in the novel and restore the genuine history embodied in the novel . She is one of the important authors of African American literary. As a Afro-American women writer, Morrison has won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, National Book Awards and so on. She is the only writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature in American history. For readers, Toni Morrison not only is a prestigious female African-American writer, but also is a senior professor, a critic, and a senior editor.
