Abstract Among numerous literary works, ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign, the unfailing theme of female tragedy has always shone in the literature history. Far from the Madding Crowd and Biancheng are both masterpieces respectively created by Thomas Hardy, a famous British writer, and Shen Congwen, a Chinese literary celebrity. In spite of the huge differences in their living eras, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds, Hardy and Shen express their deep concern about women in their works. Those women, coming from the Wessex world in Hardy’s works, and form the Western Hunan in Shen’s novels, have always been oppressed and confronted with tragic destiny in the male-oriented society. Bathsheba and Cuicui, the heroines of Far from the Madding Crowd and Biancheng respectively, are two typical tragic female images. Although they are created by different authors and even different from each other, from the perspective of ecofeminism, striking similarities between Bathsheba and Cuicui can be found out. Employing the theory of Ecofeminism, this thesis attempts to analyze the two female characters by using the comparative study method, and calls for human beings to pay more attention to female problems as well as building a more harmonious society. 1 Introduction 1.1 Research Background Females, who are physically weaker than male in most situations, have long been portrayed as “second class citizens” in the society.
