PAGE PAGE 21 Analysis of Characterization in Beloved Abstract: Nobel laureate Toni Morrison (1931--) is one of the most widely studied of contemporary American authors. Her novels, particularly Beloved, have had a dramatic impact on the American literary canon and attracted considerable critical commentary. Beloved occupies a singular place in Morison’s oeuvre and tells the story of Sethe, a fugitive slave who kills her baby to save her from slavery. Beloved is extremely popular with readers for its distinctive writing style. Since its publication, critics from all over the world have analyzed it from various angles. This paper focuses on the characterization of the novel. Introduction 1.1. Toni Morrison and Her Literary Career Toni Morrison (1931--) is a worldwide famous and one of the greatest contemporary American writer. She is the first African-American woman writer who had won the Nobel Prize for literature. At the same time, she has opened a new literature road for he fellow writers. Toni Morrison was born Choloe Anthony Wofford in 1931. At Howard University, she accomplished an undergraduate degree in English and at Cornell University, she received her Master degree. She has become an English teacher at Howard and then pursued her career as an editor at Random House, and this is the place that she specialized in black fiction. Meanwhile, she started to pursue for her literary creation. She published her novel The Bluest Eye in 1970 and Sula in 1974, making her secure a nomination for the National Book Award.
