ABSTRACT

Wedevelopaneconomictheoryofmentalhealth.Thetheoryisgroundedinclassicandmodernpsychiatricliterature,isdisciplinedwithmicrodata,andisformalizedinalife-cycleheterogeneousagentframework.Inourmodel,individualsexperiencingmentalillnesshavepessimisticexpectationsandlosetimeduetorumination.Asaresult,theyworkless,consumeless,investlessinriskyassets,andforegotreatmentwhichinturnreinforcesmentalillness.Wequantifythesocietalburdenofmentalillnessandevaluatetheefficacyofprominentpolicyproposals.Weshowthatexpandingtheavailabilityoftreatmentservicesandimprovingtreatmentofmentalillnessinlateadolescencesubstantiallyimprovementalhealthandwelfare.
