Tobetterunderstandtheboxjellieslearningabilities,scientistsconductedsomeexperiments.Theresearcherslinedtheinsideofabucketwithimagesofalternatingverticalstripes.Inonescenario,thestripeswerehigh-contrastblackandwhite,whichwasdesignedtoresemblemangroverootsinclearwater.Inanother,thestripesweregrayandwhite,whichwasmeanttoresembletherootsinmurkywater.
Asexpected,inthebucketwiththehighcontrast,thejellieseasilyavoidedcollidingwiththewall.Inthemurkywater,however,thecreaturesinitiallybumpedintothewall.Butittooklessthaneightminutesforthemtoadjusttheirbehavior.Inafinalscenario,theyplacedthejellyfishintoabucketwithjustagraywall.Thecreaturesrepeatedlycollidedwiththewallandneverchangedtheirbehavior.
“Itwasonlywhentheyhadacombinationofvisualandmechanicalstimulationthattheywouldactuallylearnsomething,”saysJanBielecki,anauthoroftheexperiments.
Next,theteamremovedtherhopalia-fourcentersofvision-fromthejellyfishandputtheminadish.Theygavethecellsasmallelectricalpulsetosimulatethejellyfishbumpingintoamangroverootwhileexposingthemtostripedimages.Injustaboutfiveminutes,thecellsappearedtomaketheconnectionbetweenthetwooccurrencesandbegansendingsignalsthatwouldcauseajellyfishtoswimintheoppositedirection.
