AutomobileBodyandFrameThebodyonthefirstautomobileswaslittlemorethanaplatformwithseatsattached.Today,theautomobilebodyallowsthedriverandpassengerstorideintotalcomfort.Butthebodyismuchmorethanacomfortable,attractiveplacetosit.Ithasevolvedintoastructurethatprotectsthedriverandpassengersinacrash.Bodydesignnowtakesintoaccountmuchthathasbeenlearnedaboutsafeconstructionthroughcrashtesting,asshowninFig.3.1.
