Many of his novels are chiefly concerned with human relationships, especially, the one between man and woman. In Lawrence’s opinion, the modern industrialized civilization is responsible for the unhealthy development of human personalities, the perversion of love and the failure of human fulfillment in marital relationships. Sons and Lovers embodies his views. Because Lawrence’s own life greatly overlaps that of Paul, one of the protagonists of the novel, Sons and Lovers is considered as a closely autobiographical novel. It describes an abnormal family, which causes unhealthy mother’s love for the sons as well as sons’ love for the mother. And the abnormal relationship between mother and son results in the split between spiritual love and physical love. As a result, Paul, the hero in the novel, is not able to love normally when he grows up. His love experience is a series of sufferings and he fails to achieve a fulfilling relationship with Miriam or Clara. The abnormal family is an important factor. We know that the series of misfortune of the characters in the novel results from the appearance of modern industrialized civilization. This paper intends to explore the themes of this novel, that is, the loss of human nature and complex relationship. II. D. H. Lawrence and His Works A. His Life Experience D. H. Lawrence was born in Eastwood, on September 11, 1885. He was the fourth child of a coal miner family. His father was a drunkard and had little education. However, his mother who once was a teacher was better educated than her husband. Lawrence’s childhood was dominated by poverty and his parents quarreled frequently. His mother lost her confidence on her husband because of his rudeness and drunken behaviors. Finally, she gave up him and then, devoted all her energy and love to
