In 2003, The National Education Department has issued New English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools, which points out?“High schools should focus their attentions on enhancing the students’ ability to gain and process information, and to analyze and solve problems on the basis of further developing students’ comprehensive applying abilities.”1 We can see how reading comprehension is emphasized from it. Instructions for using the new textbooks for senior middle school students indicate that reading activities should occupy half of the total 6 periods for each unit. What is more, in the total score of 150 points in English Test for the College Entrance Examinations, over one third is allocated to reading comprehension, amounting to 40 points. From all mentioned above, we can conclude that reading is the core and the most emphasized part of the English language teaching and learning activities in middle schools. Researches on English reading strategies have been widely conducted abroad.?“Skilled readers use different strategies in diverse ways.”?(1992)2 Researches indicate that?“skilled readers have a better meta-cognitive awareness in reading comprehension than unskilled readers.”?(2002)3 Several researches on reading strategies have been conducted by domestic scholars in recent years. Liu Dandan?(2001) conducts a case study into 43 third-year students majoring in English with quantitative and qualitative research, which show that the Chinese English learners frequently use reading strategies and there are obvious differences between successful and unsuccessful readers in terms of strategy use. Yang Xiaohu and Zhang Wenpeng?(2002) have a research on correlation studies between meta-cognitive and English reading comprehension in college students in China.
