The headline, which is usually regarded as?“eyes of the report”, is brief, accurate, and outstanding. It is placed on the most remarkable and appealing place of the news’ layout. English newspapers and periodicals are effective approaches to study and know about the society in Europe and America. However, many novel and unique headlines in the news media bring readers certain difficulty in understanding. The title in newspapers and periodicals requires the focal point to be outstanding, the content to be terse and forceful, the form to be unique and the typesetting to be striking. A piece of good title, itself is a piece of short news. Although it is brief and concise, its conception is prominent. The title is required to concentrate the subject and build a vivid image, so that the reader can explore intention and comprehend the theme from the terse and forceful title. Thus readers can choose to read relevant content according to their own need. English news headline has gradually formed a suit of special words, which is called?“headline discourse” by News scholar, and they are being accepted by newspapers and periodicals readers.1 This paper attempts to probe into the characteristic of the English news headlines from three aspects such as the choice of words, application of tense and the adopting of rhetorical devices.
