He’s greatest as a playwright and the success of his on the stage from Elizabethan England up to the present-day world chiefly depends upon his penetrating exposition of human nature, his lively paintings of human life and truthful reflections of human reality. In his tragedy works, Shakespeare shows his keen observation of the social reality around him and his unfailing condemnation of many of the social evils of that time. Along with the deepening of his understanding of the society, he comes to see clearly that there exists sharp contradictions between his lofty humanistic ideals and the evil social forces, and that the deep-rooted evils make it difficult to realize his ideals of humanism. The tragedy Hamlet, presents a hero whose power and knowledge make him more than usually harm in fighting against the outward evils.? Hamlet, a humanist who is full of intelligence, receives modern education from Wittenberg, holds good wishes for the world and withdraws from any evil deeds. But against his own will, he is pushed into a chaotic situation that he never dreams of. The knowledge he learns, the power he owes and the strange environment he lives make him lose in a cognitive confusion.? Any assessment of the prince’s power of knowledge, has to take into account of his surrounding—the royal court of Elsinore, simply because Hamlet thinks of himself very much in relation to the political life around him. By reading this drama, we gain the knowledge that Elsinore is a very political place and the new king—Claudius is in a very cunning sense. After his father’s death, Hamlet lives in a political realm based on double-dealing, power, and danger.
