The one hundred and first shoe was for Qing Tong as he deserved a new pair of shoes. Kui Hua also hankered for the shoes. However, the mother said it was absurd for a girl to wear reed shoes. What’s in the mother’s mind was to make a pair of elaborate cotton shoes for her daughter. In the following days, Qing Tong carried a dozen reed shoes to the market of the Batched Jute Field Town center for sale everyday. That was a big and prosperous town center with docks, shops, food collection stations, hospitals, and all sorts of stalls. In the hustle and bustle, Qing Tong could be found carrying shoes on his shoulder. Strung on a hemp string, these shoes wobbled all the way. The citizens of the town center and the peddlers would usually made make a lot of fuss when they saw Qing Tong approaching from the bridge.?“Oh, the dumb boy is here again selling reed shoes”. Qing Tong did not quite care about their voices. He was dumb anyway. He just wanted to sell out all his shoes. His peddling by waving hands would attract quite a number of people. Touched by the boy’s sincerity or fascinated by the quality of the shoes, these people bought all the shoes. Gradually, Qing Tong’s family accumulated lots of small change in a wooded box. The family usually surrounded the wooden box with their eyes staring at these wrinkled money. Then, the father would hide the box under the bed. The family had agreed that when they sold out all these shoes they would take a family photo in cripple Liu’s photo studio. What was more, Kui Hua would take an extra color photo.? In order to realize these short-term or long-term plans, Qing Tong took up the most convenient place at the end of the bridge for selling shoes.
