But the connotation focus of the word “family” has changed partially. According to our data, the interviewees thought that the “family” is a nuclear family instead of the big traditional family. Females still take maintaining their family’s interests as their first priority, but they do not think that will result in the sacrifice of their individual power. Moreover, they think the husband is no longer the mere only representative of the family, and both the husband and the wife protect the family’s interests. In rural areas, the division① of family power is mainly represented in the relationships between husband and wife and that between mother -in-law and daughter-in-law. Besides, the decision-making rights of important family matters also demonstrate the division of family power. Therefore, this article will study the family power relationship from these three aspects. (1) Husband-wife relationship In rural areas of Henan province, the wife calls her husband an dang jia de (the head of my family).②③ Such an appellation reflects many power-related relationships. In the regions where we had research, patrilocal residence is conducted by most couples after marriage. No matter whether the couple is from the same region or not, usually the wife would marry into the husband’s family. Such a residence system reflects that in the kinship net the wife and the husband are not equal. In the system, after marriage the woman enters the kinship net of her husband. Meanwhile, she gradually distances herself with the kinship net of her parents.
