ABSTRACT
No. 8 Middle School of Shishi City is an urban-rural high school, the students in
my classes,like the other classes in Grade 7 of my school, consist of two parts. About
two-fifths are natives and the remaining are migrant children from other regions.
Although most of the two kinds of students have studied English at the primary
schools, the placement test shows that their English is very poor.In addition, a vast
majority of the students’ parents do not have time and ability to supervise their study,
the students′ English learning is almost totally dependent on the teachers ,which
brings a tremendous challenge to the English teaching in our school.Based on our
practical situation,the paper makes appropriate suggestions that English phonetic
teaching is an indispensible teaching step in elementary stages and mainly researches
how to teach pronunciation effectively.
Education action research method is used ,which takes in the students and the
English teaching activities of two common classes of Grade Seven and lays a lot of
emphasis on examining and analyzing the teaching behaviors, decision-making and
the consequent results . While observing and analyzing the results, the researcher
reflects and changes the teaching ideas and teaching behavior.
The result shows that: The students of these two classes do much better than my
previous students of Grade Seven in identifying phonemes , reading the words with
the help of the phonetic symbols, spelling words and sentence at the teacher s
dictation ,listening and speaking . Therefore,the result indicates that the pronunciation
teaching in the order of individual phonemes—combined phonemes —letters
