ABSTRACT As the core of all linguistic skills, the sense of language can only be cultivated through effective practice, effective input in particular. This paper begins with the pros and cons of the Oxford textbooks which are widely used nowadays among students in China. It goes on to propose that “Oxford Tree” should be used as a useful supplement to foster the students’ sense of language. Based on a critical review of the sense of language as a field of research and practice both at home and abroad from 1904 to the present, this dissertation discusses the significance of fostering students’ sense of language by using the supplementary textbook. The detailed teaching approaches adopted during the experiment are also studied, which turned out to be helpful and effective. This paper closes by drawing conclusions and making suggestions for further research.
