A Survey on The Mill on the Floss Abstract: George Eliot is one of the three outstanding female writers in Victorian period, together with Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. The Mill on the Floss is her second novel after Adam Bede. Since its publication, George Eliot has received unflagging attention from critics. This article tries to summarize these criticisms mainly from four perspectives: dichotomies of her morality and religion, ambivalent feminism, tragedy of Maggie’s ending and archetype analysis. Key Words: Morality, religion, feminism, tragedy, archetype analysis. Introduction The Mill on the Floss is another important novel by George Eliot. Different from Adam Bede, autobiographical element occupies an important position in this novel. Largely based on the life experience of George Eliot herself, the novel is generally regarded as an autobiographical fiction (侯,李254). It tells a story about Maggie, who deeply loves her brother—Tom, but never gets the same treatment from him. Because of her rash behavior, uncanny intelligence, unnaturally dark skin, unruly hair and dark wild eyes, she often gets criticisms form her mother and aunts. Mr. Tulliver’s fondness and tolerance for Maggie keeps her alive in a most wholesome and healthy tenderness, although he does not understand her (付 15). She goes through two experiences of love. Her love affairs with Phillip Wakes—the deformed, artistic and sensitive son of the lawyer who is considered responsible for Mr. Tulliver’s ruin is interrupted by her brother Tom Tulliver on this account. Her “elopement” with the rich and handsome Stephen Guest, the affianced lover of her cousin Lucy ends with her repentance and returning back. With the two affairs, the relationship between Maggie and Tom deteriorates, and later breaks down.
