Abstract is an abbreviated representation of the contents of an article. It enables the readers to gain a general idea of the article within a short time and decide whether to read the work in full. With the development of English as an international language, English abstract plays a very important role in international academic exchange. Language is the product of social activity, which undergoes various kinds of functions. Halliday thinks that there are three “metafunctions” in the adult language: ideational, interpersonal and textual. The ideational function refers to the function that language serves for the expression of the speaker’s experience of the real world, the description of events and states and the entities involved in them. The interpersonal function refers to the function that language is used to establish and maintain social relations, to play the communicative roles, to show language users’ status, attitude, motivation and judgments and so on. The textual function refers to the fact that language has mechanism to make any stretch of spoken or written discourse into a coherent and unified text and to make a living passage different from a random list of sentences.
