Many network experts predict that ATM will be the technology that finally enables high-bandwidth, time-critical applications to reach the desktop. (3)Time-division multiplexing shows advantages over frequency- division multiplexing, both economically and in terms of flexibility. The circuits needed for time-division multiplexing are simple and cheap, whereas the filters required for frequency-division multiplexing tend to be complex and rather expensive. Thus time-division multiplexing, on a cost per channel basis, is cheaper to provide. Also, because each information- bearing pulse maintains its individuality in a time-division multiplex, it is comparatively easy to drop and add signals. This permits considerable simplification and flexibility at points where channels converge or branch. (4)We will now discuss a frequency-response design technique that considers phase-lead and phase-lag controllers from a somewhat different viewpoint. The resultant controller is called a PID (Proportional-plus-Integral- plus-Derivative) controller. This controller is a special type of the lag-lead controller.
