Atmospheric Corrosion Property of a Spring Steel
for High-speed Trains

Abstract: The effect of chemical composition on atmospheric corrosion of a spring steel for high-
speed trains was studied. The cyclic wet/dry test results showed that the atmospheric corrosion
property of the steel with relatively low Mn content (0.54%) could not be obviously improved even
with addition of 0.15% Cu. However, when the alloying elements content in the range of 0.73% —
1.05% Mn and 0.93% — 1.15% Cr, addition of 0.15% — 0.20% Cu could effectively improve the
atmospheric corrosion property for the steel. It was further proved by the wet/dry alternate tests
under the simulated acid rain condition that the addition of 0.15% Cu could effectively slow down
the atmospheric corrosion rate of the steel.
