社会学（社会工作）专业英语 本课程的教学目标 Main Objective This course is intended to be a undergraduate seminar on contemporary social theory in its proper sense. It pays special attention to the works by Jürgen Habermas, Anthony Giddens, among others. I have chosen these tow distinctive personalities because, in my view, they represent the top-class sociologists alive today with the most systematic efforts to work out a program of critique and a new vision of alternative society. If necessary, however, based on the consultation with the students, other theorists with significant achievements will also be considered. The objective is to carry out an explicitly focused discussion on the methodological issues of critical sociology, which I suggest as 1) critical analysis, 2) the question of agency, and 3) an alternative vision of the future society. With this consideration, therefore, we will ask repeatedly such questions as: 1) what problems do they identify as the most important ones today and how do they investigate these in their own specific way? 2) Granted that the society needs to be changed, who are likely to be the major agency of this transformation, and why, and how? What are the methodologies of such transformation? 3) What kinds of new vision for the future do they advocate? How do they support their ideas theoretically?
