What you are seeing here is the very basic and un-classified screen shot of . The Search and Rescue centers have much more dynamic versions to locate potential search ships. This screen shot has two very important highlights. Each ‘blip’ can be zoomed in on to view details of type of ship, heading, speed and contact information for the owner and possibly a call direct to the ship’s bridge. Second highlight, the serial numbers are anchored buoys which provide data on drift, wind speed, temperature and other parameters which are extremely important in determining drift of a downed aircraft or disabled ship. * These are the items to study for your airframe. I cannot provide answers…every airframe is different. You must know your aircraft. * These are the items to review before an overwater flight. Some you study for and some you brief at crew brief. * Discussion of divert fields for ETP, pressure loss, medical, or engine failure may be totally different than first turn toward rescue services. ETP assumes you are going to an airfield to land. First Turn assumes you are going to ditch, but you want to get as close as possible to the rescue field. If you can limp along or drift down to a point within ~300 miles of a rescue base, the helicopters can reach you. * Think of losing the engines at night, in the weather with low ceilings. What heading are you going to set up for? The chart takes into account predicted winds for that area and gives the best estimate. I suggest using a heading bug and updating it every hour during your crossing to the approximate ditch heading. All of these charts are free from /FNMOC * Swell heights gives you a preview of swell direction and size for your route of flight. You can sit with the chart for a minute and chair fly an approach. * Once again think that night water crossing with low ceilings. This chart provides altimeter settings for each leg of the over water. Hourly, I would suggest updating the standby altimeter to the current set
