It stretches from east of the Cape of Good Hope in the south, equator-wards to the Angola Front, which is situated near the northern geopolitical boundary of Angola (Fig.1). It represents one of the four major coastal upwelling ecosystems of the world, and as such, is an important centre of marine biodiversity and marine food production. It is in fact one of the most productive ocean areas in the world, with a mean annual primary productivity of 1.25grams of carbon per square meter per year - about six times higher than the North Sea ecosystem. Near-shore and off-shore sediments hold rich deposits of precious minerals (particularly diamonds), as well as important oil and gas reserves. The natural beauty of the
