Invitroantibacterialactivityofmethanol,ethanol,andethylacetateextractsofrawandprocessedhoneywastestedagainstGram- positivebacteria(Staphylococcusaureus,Bacillussubtilis,Bacilluscereus,Enterococcusfaecalis,andMicrococcusluteus)andGram- negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi). Both types of honey showed antibacterial activityagainsttestedorganismswiththezoneofinhibition(ZOI)rangingfrom6.94to37.94mm,whileE.coli,S.typhi,and P.aeruginosashowedthatsensibilitytowardsalltheextractswithZOIrangesbetween13.09to37.94mm.Themethanolextract showedmorepotentactivitythanotherorganicextracts.Gram-negativebacteriawerefoundtobemoresusceptibleascomparedto Gram-positivebacteriaexceptE.faecalis.Thebrothmicrodilutionassaygaveminimuminhibitoryconcentrations(MIC)valueof 625μg/mL,whiletheminimumbactericidalconcentration(MBC)rangesbetween625μg/mL2500μg/mL.Thestudyshowedthat honeyhasantibacterialactivity(bacteriostaticandbactericidale?ect),similartoantibiotics,againsttestorganismsandprovides alternativetherapyagainstcertainbacteria. 1.Introduction that honey inhibits a broad spectrum of bacterial species.
