Cholinergicmuscarinicreceptors(MRs)andmonoamineoxidaseactivity(MAO-B),expressedbothinbrainandbloodcells, wereinvestigatedinanimalsandexposedsubjectstoassess(i)MeHg(0.5–1mg/kg/dayGD7-PD7)and/orPCB153(20mg/kg/day GD10–GD16)e?ectsoncerebellarMAO-BandMRs,andlymphocyteMRs,indamsando?spring21dayspostpartum;(ii)MAO- BinplateletsandMRsinlymphocytesofaFaroese7-year-oldchildrencohort,prenatallyexposedtoMeHg/PCBs.AnimalData. MAO-BwasalteredinmalecerebellumbyMeHg,PCB153,andtheircombination(35%,45%,and25%decrease,resp.).Cerebellar MRswereenhancedbyMeHgaloneindams(87%)andmalepups(27%).PCB153aloneandinmixturedidnotmodifycerebellar MRs.Similarlytobrain,lymphocyteMRswereenhancedinbothdamsando?springbyMeHgalone.Allchangeswerecausedby 1MeHgmg/kg/day,thelowerdosewasine?ective.HumanData.Bothbiomarkersshowedhomogeneousdistributionswithinthe cohort(MRs,range0.1–36.78fmol/millioncells;MAO-B,0.95–14.95nmol/mgprotein/h).Nocorrelationwasfoundbetweenthe twobiomarkersandneurotoxicantconcentrationsinblood(pre-andpostnatally). 1.Introduction Noteworthy,severalepidemiologicstudiesonneurobe- havioural endpoints in ?sh-eating populations at various worldsites,includingtheFaroeIslands[8],theMadeiraIs- l
