Themethodofoptimizationalgorithmsisoneofthemostimportantparameterswhichwillstronglyin?uencethe?delityof the solution during an aerodynamic shape optimization problem. Nowadays, various optimization methods, such as genetic algorithm (GA), simulated annealing (SA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO), are more widely employed to solve the aerodynamicshapeoptimizationproblems.Inadditiontotheoptimizationmethod,thegeometryparameterizationbecomesan importantfactortobeconsideredduringtheaerodynamicshapeoptimizationprocess.Theobjectiveofthisworkistointroduce theknowledgeofdescribinggeneralairfoilgeometryusingtwelveparametersbyrepresentingitsshapeasapolynomialfunction andcoupling thisapproach with ?owsolutionandoptimization algorithms.Anaerodynamic shapeoptimizationproblemis formulatedforNACA0012airfoilandsolvedusingthemethodsofsimulatedannealingandgeneticalgorithmfor5.0degangle ofattack.Theresultsshowthatthesimulatedannealingoptimizationschemeismoree?ectivein?ndingtheoptimumsolution amongthevariouspossiblesolutions.ItisalsofoundthattheSAshowsmoreexploitationcharacteristicsascomparedtotheGA whichisconsideredtobemoree?ectiveexplorer. 1.Introduction employed:partialdi?erentialequationappro
