DURSUNIRK,ANDALI˙ S?AHIN ˙ ˙ ˙ Received25August2004andinrevisedform22December2004 Bothtime-andspace-splitted Burgers’equationsaresolvednumerically.CubicB-spline collocationmethodisappliedtothetime-splittedBurgers’equation.QuadraticB-spline collocationmethodisusedtogetnumericalsolutionofthespace-splittedBurgers’equa- tion.Theresultsofbothschemesarecomparedforsometestproblems. 1.Introduction TheBurgers’equation ?rstappearedinthepaperbyBateman[3],whomentioned two oftheessentially steadysolutions. Due toextensiveworks ofBurgers [4]involving the Burgers’equationespecially asamathematical modelfortheturbulence, itisknownas Burgers’equation.Theequationisusedasamodelin?eldsaswideasheatconduction [5],gasdynamics [13],shockwaves[4],longitudinal elasticwavesinanisotropicsolid [15],numbertheory[18],continuesstochasticprocesses[5],andsoforth.Hopf[8]and Cole [5] solved the Burgers’ equation analytically and independently forarbitrary ini- tialconditions.Inmanycases,thesesolutionsinvolvein?niteserieswhichmayconverge very slowly forsmall values ofviscosity coe?cients ν,which correspond tosteep wave frontsinthepropagationofthedynamicwaveforms.Burgers’equationshowsasimilar featureswithNavier-Stokesequation duetotheformofthenonlinear convectionterm andtheoccurrenceoftheviscosityterm.Beforeconcentratingonthenumericalsolution oftheNavier-Stokesequation, itseems reasonable to?rststudyasimple model ofthe Burgers’equation.Therefore,theBurgers’equationhasbeenusedasamodelequationto testthenumericalmethodsintermsofaccuracyandstabilityfortheNavier-Stokesequa- tion.Manyauthorshaveusedavarietyofnumericaltechniquesforgettingthenumerical solutionoftheBurgers’equation.Numericaldi?cultieshavebeencomeacrossinthenu- mericalsolutionoftheBurgers’equationwithaverysmallviscosity.Variousnumerical techniquesaccompaniedwithsplinefunctionshavebeensetupforcomputingthesolu- tionsoftheBurgers’equation.RubinandG
