Background.Elderlywomenwithbreastcancerareconsideredunderdiagnosedandundertreated,andthisadverselya?ectstheir overallsurvival.Methods.Atotalof393femalebreastcancerpatientsaged70yearsandolder,diagnosedwithintheyears1989– 1999,wereidenti?edfromthetumorregistryofTheBrooklynHospitalCenter.Comparisonsbetweenthe3di?erentsubgroups 70–74,75–79,and80yearsandolderweremadeusingthePearsonChiSquaretest.Results.Lumpectomywasperformedin42% ofallpatients,whilemastectomywasdonein46%ofpatients.Adjuvanttherapysuchaschemotherapy,radiationtherapy,and hormonaltherapyweredonein12%,25%,and38%,respectively.Forty-sevenpercentofpatientswithpositivelymphnodes receivedchemotherapy.Eighty-sixpercentofpatientswhowereestrogenreceptor-positivereceivedadjuvanthormonaltherapy. Overall?ve-yearsurvivalwasonly14%forthe≥80agegroup,comparedtothatof32%and35%forthe70–74andthe75–79 agegroups,respectively.Conclusions.Surgerywasperformedinmajorityofthesepatients,abouthalfreceivedlumpectomy,the otherhalfmastectomy.Adjuvanttherapieswerefrequentlyexcluded,withonlyhormonaltherapybeingthemostcommonlyused.
