Thecapacitytovoteinpatientswithmentalillnessisincreasinglyquestioned.Theobjectiveofthisstudyistoevaluatethiscapacity inagroupofsubjectswithdementia(Alzheimer’sdisease)andotherelderlysubjectswithoutdementia.Withasampleof68 subjectswithdementiaand25controlslivinginaseniorresidence,atransversalstudywascarriedoutover4months.Subjects wereevaluatedwiththeMini-MentalStateExamination(MMSE)andtheCompetenceAssessmentToolforvoting(CAT-V).The resultsweremorepositivefortheDoecriteria(aspartoftheCAT-V),andacorrelationwasfoundwiththeMMSEinsubjectswith dementiaand,toalesserdegree,inthecontrols.Weconcludethatthecapacitytovoteisrelatedtocognitivedeteriorationand, withinthat,ismorerelatedtounderstandingandappreciation. 1.Introduction Our study attempts to resolve these questions in two ways: using the MMSE [6] as a cognitive variable and the CAT-Vasavotingtestintwosamples:onegroupofpatients withAlzheimer’sdementialivinginaseniorresidenceand asecondgroupofpersonslivinginthesameresidencewho su?ernomentalillness.
