SeveralstrainsofGram-negativeandGram-positivesulphate-reducingbacteria(SRB)areabletousecarbonmonoxide(CO)asa carbonsourceandelectrondonorforbiologicalsulphatereduction.ThesestrainsexhibitvariableresistancetoCOtoxicity.The mostresistantSRBcangrowanduseCOasanelectrondonoratconcentrationsupto100%,whereasothersarealreadyseverely inhibitedatCOconcentrationsaslowas1-2%.Here,theutilization,inhibitioncharacteristics,andenzymologyofCOmetabolism aswellasthecurrentstateofgenomicsofCO-oxidizingSRBarereviewed.Carboxydotrophicsulphate-reducingbacteriacanbe appliedforbiologicalsulphatereductionwithsynthesisgas(amixtureofhydrogenandcarbonmonoxide)asanelectrondonor. 1.Introduction sulphate-rich,heavymetalcontaminatedwastewaters.Heavy metalssuchasCu,Zn,Cd,Pb,Ni,andFecanberemoved from waste streams by precipitation with biogenic sul?de. Becauseofdi?erencesinsolubilityofproducts,themetals canbeselectivelyprecipitated,whichenablestheirrecovery an
